Слово “chair“, часто используемое в российских переводах в значение “кафедра”, такого значения не имеет, а означает руководящую (“заведующий”) или профессорскую должность в университете.

Вот определение словаря “Macmillan”: “CHAIR – the position or job of being a professor in a university – He held the Chair of Botany at Cambridge for 30 years” – Что можно перевести: “Он 30 лет был главным специалистом по ботанике в Кембридже”).

Таким образом, все приведенные примеры доказывают, что “chair” в контексте высшего образование относится к должности или званию человека и не может переводиться на русский язык как “кафедра” (department).
